We stoppen bij Jo’s Coffee, bekend om de mintgroene “I love you so much”-muur.
Geschiedenis herleeft in Oost-Austin
On South Congress Avenue, vintage shops and street art blend into a colorful mix. We stop at Jo’s Coffee, known for the mint green “I love you so much” wall. What began as a spontaneous love note in red spray paint grew into a hotspot for selfies, marriage proposals and family photos. Austin carries the slogan “Keep Austin Weird” with pride, and you feel it on every corner.
Glass and concrete in North Austin
We drive through North Austin and watch glass towers now dominate the skyline. Companies like Dell and Apple have turned this side of the city into a hub of efficiency, everything sleek and streamlined. But how does that promise of rebellion hold up in a city where tech giants trade wooden porches for gleaming skyscrapers?
History comes alive in East Austin
Heading east, we feel the history of the South right away. At Victory East Grill, once part of the Chitlin’ Circuit, a network of venues that gave Black artists a stage during segregation between the thirties and sixties. Mahogany furniture, a long dark bar, plenty of strong drink. Here you feel the pulse of jazz and blues, imagining legends like Tina Turner, B.B. King and Otis Redding setting the room on fire.
A few streets over, at Franklin’s Barbecue, a line of people in camping chairs already forms by eleven in the morning. Not without reason, since many consider this the best brisket in America. Owner Aaron Franklin says a good steak needs no sauce, and his line about sauce hiding more flaws than a maternity dress is nearly as famous as his barbecue.
“The secret of Austin is that it stays itself, with a wink and an open invitation for everyone.”
Food trucks as a culinary haven
Austin is known for its food truck culture, and you taste it everywhere in the city. Classic barbecue and Tex-Mex sit alongside Asian fusion and Mediterranean snacks, all within a few blocks of each other. For many chefs, a food truck marks the start of their culinary path, offering the freedom to build a menu without the overhead of a full restaurant. Vegan trucks like Arlo’s and The Vegan Nom draw lines just as long as the barbecue spots.
West Austin: luxury with a view
West Austin shows a different face of the city. Green hills, luxury homes and sweeping views make this the wealthiest part of town. The arrival of tech companies like Tesla and Oracle keeps drawing young professionals, driving up home prices and pushing gentrification further. Fortunately, some government programs give original residents the chance to return to their old neighborhoods by leasing the land.
Chickenshit bingo and nights that buzz
On Sunday afternoon we head to C-Boy’s Heart & Soul at four for a distinctly Texan pastime: chickenshit bingo. A chicken decides the winner by where it does its business on a numbered board. Absurd, but charming enough to hold our attention for a whole afternoon.
We close out the day in the Red River Cultural District, eleven blocks packed with live music and neon light. From punk at Mohawk to outdoor shows at Stubb’s, and for something different there is the mechanical bull at Wild Greg’s Saloon. On Rainy Street, a former residential block lined with charming bungalows turned bars, we start with a craft beer at Banger’s and end with live music on the patio at Lustre Pearl.
Walking back to the hotel, a man stands at an intersection playing guitar for an empty hat, no audience in sight, as if it makes no difference to him whether anyone is listening.
