There are no cars left at the rental counter at Logan Airport, and the few that remain cost four hundred dollars a day. Outside waits an Indian summer that has not yet arrived, since it is only September. We had counted on leaves, on gold and orange stretching to the horizon, and now stand empty handed on an airport curb wondering what twenty four hours in Boston are supposed to become.
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum seems like a good idea, until the sign on the door meets us halfway: closed, and on the one day of the week that it is. Running on jet lag, too little sleep and no coffee, we sit on a wooden bench in the park across from the museum while a single branch overhead already turns fire red. A teaser of what could have been.
Then we see the flag
On a flagpole outside a house across from the museum, a lone Italian flag hangs and flutters. There is no good explanation for why this is exactly the moment everything turns around, but our hearts start beating faster and we run back toward the subway. Eleven stops on the green line later we step out in the North End, and feel the Italian influence before we have even read a street sign: the sharp smell of coffee mixes with fresh baked bread and pasta dough drifting through a half open door.
“It feels un-American, if that is even a word.”
Salem Street and the bricks of Sicily
Compact red bricks, narrow facades, balconies that push a few inches into the street; it brings to mind the architecture of Sicily, not Massachusetts. Catholic churches with stained glass windows and white statues of Mary stand beside signs bearing Italian regional names, remnants of the wave of immigrants who came here in the early twentieth century looking for work in construction and textiles. At the tiny record shop Good Taste Records, tucked between the houses, Coty and Lindsey put fifteen years of international DJ experience to work helping us find the right record, from hip hop to jazz. At Polcari’s Coffee, opened in 1932 by Anthony Polcari shortly after he crossed over from Italy, we smell pumpkin spice, freshly ground beans and the smoky scent of Lapsang souchong tea. His son later took over the shop, building loyalty not with trading cards but with the same hospitality. A few doors down, Italian heritage calls out to us inside the bookstore I Am Books, where Italian American writers sign their work between the shelves.
Where the day repairs itself
At Eataly we eat, shop and learn about Italian cuisine all at once, and on the third floor the rooftop restaurant Terra prepares dishes over a wood fired oven, a touch pricey for what lands on the plate, but the flavor makes up for plenty. After dinner there is one more stop: coffee at Central Perk on Newbury Street, where the iconic orange couch lets us sit inside an episode of Friends for a moment. That is how a day that began at five in the morning with a locked door and an empty parking lot turns into something worth telling people about.
“The North End has not a single traffic light, which makes it a singular neighborhood in modern Boston.”
Hull Street, the narrowest street in the neighborhood, forces pedestrians to pass each other with a sideways step. Paul Revere once lived here, his house from 1680 still stands, and the rivalry between Mike’s Pastry and Modern Pastry has become something close to a matter of faith. Outside, evening settles over Hanover Street. An old man in a gray vest sets two chairs on the sidewalk in front of his door and sits down, waiting for no one in particular, while the smell of garlic drifts out from the kitchen behind him.

Visiting Boston’s North End: what to know
The North End is Boston’s oldest residential neighborhood, with narrow streets between Hanover Street and Salem Street. The Freedom Trail cuts right through, passing Paul Revere House from 1680 and Old North Church, where the lanterns of 1775 sparked the American Revolution. Plan a full day for the neighborhood itself. The nearest T stop is Haymarket on the orange and green lines.
The area is famous for its Italian community, established in 1860. For pasta try Giacomo’s Ristorante or Regina Pizzeria at 11½ Thacher Street, open since 1926. For cannoli, head to Mike’s Pastry or Modern Pastry on Hanover Street. Take the MBTA Silver Line from Logan Airport and transfer to the blue line to Aquarium station, which is the fastest route without a car.
