Standing on the glass Skywalk, roughly 4,000 feet above the canyon floor, every step feels like a test of the glass itself. Barely three hours earlier we drove out of Las Vegas; here, it is not only the rock wall that splits in two, time shifts as well, without us noticing.
“Where you expect a mountain range, the earth itself tears open.”
A straight line through the desert
Once we leave the city, the neon disappears behind us. We drive an endless straight line through the desert, the road cutting through a gently rolling plateau, sand and low scrub filling the horizon all the way to the edge. That very flatness is what makes the first sight of the canyon so disorienting. Only at the rim does the mile-deep gorge open up, carved by the Colorado River, with steep, bone-dry walls.
For a day trip out of Las Vegas, the route is simple: rent a car, drive just over two hours east toward Hoover Dam and Arizona, and after the highway take a narrower two-lane road past an old airstrip to the central parking lot at Grand Canyon West. From there, we switch to the shuttle buses that loop between the viewpoints.
On the glass above the Colorado
Eagle Point is the first stop, with a direct view straight into the canyon, but the real highlight sits a few steps further, the horseshoe-shaped glass Skywalk. The moment we step onto the glass, everything goes quiet. Below us, the rock wall drops straight down to a thin gray-green line where the Colorado carves its path. For many visitors, fear of heights stops being an abstract idea here; with slightly trembling knees, we shuffle foot by foot toward the far point.
The bus continues on to Guano Point, rougher and less developed. The driver grins and explains that guano simply means bat droppings, once mined from a cave in the canyon wall for nitrate and explosives. The rusted remains of a cable system and old equipment still lie scattered across the plateau, while helicopters fly single file into the canyon, reduced against the massive back wall to nothing more than black specks.
A border we never feel
After this final viewpoint, we begin the drive back. Time takes center stage again along the way: the car’s dashboard clock reads half past twelve, our phones say half past one. Without noticing, we crossed the line between Nevada and Arizona, the divide between two time zones. That extra hour buys us just enough time for a stop at Hoover Dam.
From dam to bridge to burger
Hoover Dam stands as an icon of art deco design and American engineering from the era of the Great Depression. Below us, a 726-foot arch-gravity dam holds back the Colorado River and forms Lake Mead, the reservoir that supplies water and power to, among others, Las Vegas. A few hundred yards further, the slender Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge spans the river. Where the dam looks solid and earthbound, the bridge’s arch seems almost weightless; from the walkway, we look out over the reservoir and straight down onto the dam, which appears strikingly small from up here.
On the drive back, the glowing facades of the Strip grow closer again. A day of Las Vegas and Grand Canyon West ends with a burger at In-N-Out, the yellow arrow visible from far down the road. As we take a bite, images of the Sphere flash past and the hotel signs light up. A thin, yellowish haze hangs like a veil over the city as we drive back in. I chew the last few fries I stuffed into my mouth in one go. The empty carton lies on the floor.
