Gulls glide over the air currents in the blue hour, while the beach and dunes still hold their gray blue tone; the tide is in and our feet sink into the wet sand with every step. Heaps of seaweed lie like tagliatelle a meter from the water line, mixed with white foam, and here and there jellyfish wait for the water that will soon carry them back into the deep. The surf pushes water up the beach in a steady rhythm, until it slowly fades into a monotonous murmur.
An inlet no one expects
From the beach entrance at Noord, we walk about three kilometers toward Schoorl until a row of wooden breakwaters appears in the sand. To the right, an inlet opens up in the dunes; we climb up, the sound of the sea drops into the background, and the loose sand gives way to a green oasis we did not expect to find here. In 1997, the Dutch water authority dug an eighty meter wide passage between the sea and the land behind it, as a test to boost biodiversity in the valley; within a month the valley had already filled with water.
“As the salt water mixes with the fresh water, a new habitat forms for plants and animals.”
Those who prefer not to walk can take a bike instead. From Schoorl, Bergen or Bergen aan Zee, the dune paths bring us within half an hour to the turnoff toward the beach; we lock the bike at the fence and walk left into the valley. And if we thought sunrise was the only beautiful moment here, we would be wrong. The Kerf is worth visiting at any hour of the day, though the hour before and after sunrise, the blue hour and the golden hour as photographers call them, offers a light we will not find at any other time.
Where salt meets fresh
At high water, sea water used to wash into the valley behind the first row of dunes, mixing with fresh water to create a new dynamic. The salty, damp, lime rich soil grows vegetation we will not find anywhere else nearby: marsh grass of parnassus, sea fennel, sea pea, seaside centaury. All those plants in turn attract birds and insects, from herring gulls to spoonbills, marsh harriers and falcons, while natterjack toads, butterflies, damselflies and emerald dragonflies dart through the grass.
The moment the light changes
We find a spot where the sand turns into marram grass, and wait. Slowly a line of orange fire rises above the horizon, the sky and the ground take on a golden glow, and the golden hour begins. Grasses glimmer in the sharp light and sway with a light sea breeze, while the rising sun catches the wings of thousands of tiny flies hovering above the pools. Mosquitoes drift sleepily side by side on the water, leaving small rings on the surface.
What remains of the passage
No sea water flows into the Kerf anymore; the channel is gradually silting up as wind blows sand into the opening, while plants like sand couch grass and marram grass hold the drifting sand in place on the dune. Our gaze drifts over the green land behind it, where a gull in the air answers the shrill call of a coot and a frog keeps the rhythm going with its croak.
By the time we leave the silence of the Kerf, the early risers have already reached the beach. Dogs sprint gleefully across the wet sand, here and there someone braves a cold morning swim, and at beach pavilion BadaBing someone is just setting out the first chairs for the day that is only now truly beginning.

Visiting De Kerf nature area: what to know
De Kerf sits between Bergen aan Zee and Schoorl aan Zee in the Schoorl Dunes. The notch was cut in 1997 as the first example of dynamic coastal management. During storms and spring tides, sea water flows into the Parnassia Valley, allowing sea aster, sea beet, and glasswort to grow. The opening to the sea has since silted up, but the brackish pool remains and the area is still very much alive. Free access; dogs on lead between March 1 and September 1 for the breeding season.
From Bergen aan Zee it’s a thirty-minute walk north along the beach to De Kerf. An alternative inland route runs via Duiningang Verspyckweg, address Verspyckweg 17 in Bergen aan Zee. For sunrise, start walking at five in the morning from May through August. Bring a flashlight, water, camera, and a warm jacket. The viewing platform above De Kerf gives you the full panorama over the dune lake, beach, and sea.
