Na de ingang van MoMA slaan we de hoek om en vallen als eerste de enorme ramen op, van vloer tot plafond. Voorbij de zilveren rij tourniquets staan we plotseling oog in oog met een muur van vijf bij zes meter: het canvas van ‘Unsupervised’. Op zwarte kunstleren kubussen zitten mensen zwijgend om ons heen, alsof we per ongeluk in de stiltecoupé van een trein zijn gestapt.
Verf die zijn eigen weg zoekt
De kleuren op de muur bewegen als een wervelende massa, alsof ze een uitgang uit het canvas zoeken. Eerst oranje en blauw, dan zwart, wit en rood. Hoge golven en kronkelende vormen dansen omhoog in een soort 3D die ons brein niet meteen accepteert. Dan verandert het canvas ineens: steden, natuur, mensen, een gezicht, misschien een vrouw. Onze hersenen doen wat ze kunnen om de chaos te ordenen, een soort tevergeefse Marie Kondo binnen onze eigen schedel.

Data als verf, prompts als penseel
Kunstenaar Refik Anadol gebruikt machine learning om te schilderen, waarbij de computer visuele en informatieve data van tweehonderd jaar museumcollectie interpreteert en voortdurend omzet in nieuwe beelden. Zijn inspiratie komt uit ‘Blade Runner’, en dat merken we: er hangt iets dreigends en dromerigs tegelijk in de kleuren die over de muur golven.
Is dit dan controversieel?
Meer dan honderd jaar geleden zorgde Picasso voor ophef met zijn rauwe weergave van vijf naakte figuren in een bordeel in Barcelona, een schilderij dat nu een verdieping hoger dan ‘Unsupervised’ hangt. MoMA herbergt wel meer werk dat ooit voor tumult zorgde: Duchamps omgekeerde urinoir ‘Fountain’ uit 1917, dat de definitie van kunst zelf ter discussie stelde, of Barbara Krugers politiek geladen ‘Untitled (Your body is a battleground)’ uit 1989. De vraag ligt voor de hand: zijn data-analisten de nieuwe kunstenaars die breken met de gevestigde vorm? Of blijft dit vooral een technisch hulpmiddel, indrukwekkend maar zonder de intentie die een penseel wel heeft? Niemand in de zaal geeft antwoord, iedereen blijft gewoon kijken.
Terug op straat
Buiten op Manhattan lopen mannen en vrouwen in pak voorbij met strakke gezichten, op weg naar bestemmingen die net zo onbekend blijven als de vraag die we net mee naar buiten nemen. Bij Cha Cha Matcha wacht een groene, bijna sciencefiction-achtige koffie: een matcha havermelk latte macchiato met gember en kaneel, precies het soort tegenpool dat ons hoofd nodig heeft na een half uur golvende kleuren.
Zo bekeken staat ‘Unsupervised’ misschien niet zo ver af van die eerdere schandalen als het op het eerste gezicht lijkt. Elke generatie kunstenaars breekt met wat daarvoor kwam, of dat nu een penseel is of een algoritme dat tweehonderd jaar aan beelden herkauwt tot iets nieuws.
Aan het tafeltje bij het raam roert iemand langzaam in zijn matcha, terwijl buiten een taxi net op tijd afremt voor een fietser die de straat oversteekt.
Past the entrance of MoMA we turn the corner and the first thing we notice are the enormous windows, floor to ceiling. Beyond the silver row of turnstiles we suddenly find ourselves face to face with a wall five by six meters wide: the canvas of ‘Unsupervised’. On black faux leather cubes people sit silently around us, as if we accidentally stepped into the quiet car of a train.
Paint that finds its own way
The colors on the wall move like a swirling mass, as if searching for a way out of the canvas. First orange and blue, then black, white and red. Tall waves and twisting shapes dance upward in a kind of three dimensional motion our brain does not immediately accept. Then the canvas suddenly changes: cities, nature, people, a face, maybe a woman. Our brain does what it can to organize the chaos, a futile attempt at tidying up inside our own skull.

Data as paint, prompts as brush
Artist Refik Anadol uses machine learning to paint, where the computer interprets visual and informational data from two hundred years of museum collections and constantly converts it into new images. His inspiration comes from ‘Blade Runner’, and we can feel it: something both ominous and dreamlike lingers in the colors rolling across the wall.
Is this controversial then
More than a hundred years ago Picasso caused an uproar with his raw depiction of five nude figures in a Barcelona brothel, a painting that now hangs one floor above ‘Unsupervised’. MoMA holds plenty of other work that once caused a stir too: Duchamp’s inverted urinal ‘Fountain’ from 1917, which questioned the very definition of art, or Barbara Kruger’s politically charged ‘Untitled (Your body is a battleground)’ from 1989. The question seems obvious: are data analysts the new artists breaking with established form? Or does this remain mostly a technical tool, impressive but lacking the intention a brush carries? No one in the room answers, everyone just keeps watching.
Back on the street
Outside on the streets of Manhattan, men and women in suits walk past with tight expressions, heading toward destinations just as unknown as the question we just carried out with us. At Cha Cha Matcha a green, almost science fiction looking drink waits: a matcha oat milk latte macchiato with ginger and cinnamon, exactly the kind of counterweight our head needs after half an hour of shifting colors.
Seen this way, ‘Unsupervised’ might not stand as far apart from those earlier scandals as it first appears. Every generation of artists breaks with what came before, whether that means a brush or an algorithm chewing through two hundred years of images to produce something new.
At the table by the window someone slowly stirs their matcha, while outside a taxi brakes just in time for a cyclist crossing the street.
