Min vijftien graden. We zetten een stap buiten en de kou slaat meteen in ons gezicht, scherp als een tik. De sneeuw knerpt onder onze schoenen, onze adem rent als een wolkje voor ons uit. Taxi’s razen voorbij met beslagen achterruiten, terwijl Chicago nog in een winterse sluimer lijkt te liggen. Achter die ramen schuilt warmte, koffie en het perfecte excuus om eerst rustig wakker te worden.
Opwarmen bij Hero Coffee Bar
Eerste stop: koffie, in een steegje dat bijna verborgen ligt voor de rest van de stad. We duwen de houten deur open en de geur van versgemalen bonen komt ons meteen tegemoet. Een vleugje kaneel, het sissen van melk in de steamer, gedempte gesprekken achter de counter. In de hoek zit een man volledig opgeslokt door zijn boek, zijn handen om een mok gevouwen.
We bestellen een cappuccino, dubbele shot espresso natuurlijk, en voelen de warmte langzaam terugkeren in onze vingers. Buiten mag het gerust winter blijven. Hierbinnen is het behaaglijk genoeg.
The Rookery Building en een stad die uit haar as herrees
Opgewarmd lopen we naar The Rookery Building, een blok baksteen en staal met sierlijke details uit een ander tijdperk. Gebouwd na de Grote Brand van 1871, toen Chicago zichzelf letterlijk opnieuw moest opbouwen. Het was een van de eerste gebouwen ter wereld die een stalen skelet combineerde met een traditionele stenen gevel, en daarmee de wolkenkrabber mogelijk maakte.
Binnen houdt het marmeren atrium het daglicht vast dankzij glazen dakramen, een ingreep van Frank Lloyd Wright uit 1905. We laten onze hand over de smeedijzeren trapleuning glijden, koud en glad onder onze vingers.

Lunchen bij The Dearborn
The Dearborn roept, met houten tafels en het soort licht waarin iedereen er goed uitziet. De geur van gekarameliseerde ui en gesmolten kaas hangt zwaar in de lucht. Een French onion soup, een cheddar-appelsandwich: krokant brood, zoet, zout, hartig, in precies de juiste hoeveelheden. Aan de bar draait een barman een citroenschilletje rond de rand van een glas. Buiten dwarrelen sneeuwvlokken voorbij de ramen, bijna komisch precies op tijd.
Stilte bij de Poetry Foundation Library
Na de lunch zoeken we iets anders op: de Poetry Foundation Library, waar de hectiek van de stad ineens niet meer bestaat. Geen rijen, geen haast, alleen boeken vol gedichten. We trekken een willekeurige bundel uit de kast en lezen een paar regels van Aram Saroyan, iets over tijd die zich niet laat haasten en een hand die past zoals die past.
Buiten schuifelen voetgangers door de sneeuw. Hierbinnen ruikt het naar oud papier, met alleen het zachte geknisper van omslaande pagina’s als geluid.
De laatste voorstelling bij The Music Box Theatre
Als de avond valt, wacht de laatste stop: The Music Box Theatre uit 1929. Art-decodetails, een sterrenhemelplafond, versierde zuilen. De foyer ruikt naar versgebrande popcorn en muffe vloerbedekking, een geur die precies goed voelt. Het theater overleefde de Grote Depressie en de komst van multiplexen en blijft tot vandaag een toevluchtsoord voor wie van film houdt.
De gordijnen schuiven open, het licht flikkert, we zakken dieper in de rode pluchen stoel. Als we later weer buiten staan, ligt er een verse laag sneeuw. De lantaarns werpen een warme gloed op de straten en we trekken onze sjaal iets strakker aan. Chicago in de winter is koud, maar het pakt je op zijn eigen manier toch weer helemaal in.
Fifteen below zero. We step outside and the cold hits us in the face right away, sharp as a slap. Snow crunches under our boots, our breath runs ahead of us like a small cloud. Taxis race past with fogged-up back windows, while Chicago still seems half asleep under its winter blanket. Behind those windows waits warmth, coffee and the perfect excuse to wake up slowly.
Warming up at Hero Coffee Bar
First stop: coffee, tucked into an alley that is almost hidden from the rest of the city. We push open the wooden door and the smell of freshly ground beans meets us right away. A trace of cinnamon, milk hissing in the steamer, muffled conversation behind the counter. In the corner sits a man completely absorbed in his book, hands wrapped around a mug.
We order a cappuccino, double shot of espresso of course, and feel the warmth slowly return to our fingers. Outside, winter can carry on as long as it wants. In here, it is cozy enough.
The Rookery Building and a city rebuilt from ash
Warmed up, we walk to The Rookery Building, a block of brick and steel with ornate details from another era. Built after the Great Fire of 1871, when Chicago had to rebuild itself from scratch. It was one of the first buildings in the world to pair a steel skeleton with a traditional stone facade, a combination that made skyscrapers possible.
Inside, the marble atrium holds onto daylight through glass skylights, a touch added by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1905. We run a hand along the wrought iron staircase railing, cold and smooth under our fingers.

Lunch at The Dearborn
The Dearborn calls, with wooden tables and the kind of lighting that makes everyone look good. The smell of caramelized onion and melted cheese hangs thick in the air. A French onion soup, a cheddar and apple sandwich: crisp bread, sweet, salty, savory, all in exactly the right amounts. At the bar, a bartender twists a lemon peel around the rim of a glass. Outside, snowflakes drift past the windows, almost comically on cue.
Silence at the Poetry Foundation Library
After lunch we seek out something else entirely: the Poetry Foundation Library, where the city’s rush simply stops existing. No lines, no hurry, just shelves of poetry. We pull a random collection off the shelf and read a few lines by Aram Saroyan, something about time that refuses to be rushed and a hand that fits exactly as it should.
Outside, pedestrians shuffle past through the snow. In here it smells like old paper, with only the soft crackle of turning pages for sound.
One last show at The Music Box Theatre
As evening falls, the last stop waits: The Music Box Theatre, built in 1929. Art deco details, a ceiling painted like a night sky, ornate columns. The lobby smells of freshly popped popcorn and slightly musty carpet, a smell that feels exactly right. The theater survived the Great Depression and the rise of multiplexes and remains a refuge for film lovers to this day.
The curtains part, the projector flickers, we sink deeper into the red velvet seat. When we step back outside later, a fresh layer of snow has fallen. The streetlamps cast a warm glow on the streets and we pull our scarves a little tighter. Chicago in winter is cold, but it wraps you up in its own way all the same.
