Van film kijken in een oude tramremise tot een monumentaal pathologisch-anatomisch laboratorium: Amsterdam heeft genoeg bioscopen die zichzelf niet serieus genoeg nemen om alleen maar zwarte stoelen en popcorn te serveren. Vijf plekken waar de zaal zelf al reden is om te gaan, nog voor de film begint.
Het Ketelhuis, tussen de fabrieksschoorstenen
We steken de brug over bij het Westerpark en staan tussen de monumentale gebouwen van de Westergas. Het volledig gerestaureerde fabriekspand van Het Ketelhuis is een van de belangrijkste plekken voor Nederlandse film, aangevuld met Europese arthousetitels, jeugdfilms en documentaires. Vanaf tien uur ’s ochtends kunnen we er koffie drinken met de krant, of een vegetarische lunch bestellen op een van de twee terrassen, waar we met huisgemaakte gemberlimonade bijkomen van een wandeling door het park.
De Filmhallen in een oude tramremise
Negen zalen met het breedste filmaanbod van de stad, van mainstream tot experimenteel, in een industrieel interieur met hoge plafonds, stalen balken en oude trambanken in de lobby; we zouden zweren dat we in een verlaten tramstation zijn beland. De bioscoop werkt samen met festivals als IDFA en het Amsterdam Spanish Film Festival, en wie voor of na de film nog trek heeft loopt door naar de Foodhallen ernaast, waar twintig kraampjes van Aziatische streetfood tot Italiaanse delicatessen serveren.

LAB111, kleur in een oud laboratorium
In een voormalig pathologisch-anatomisch laboratorium schilderden ze de muren roze, lavendelblauw en pastelgroen, legden ze Perzische tapijten neer en hingen ze een muurschildering van Dr. Strangelove op; samen een kleurenparadijs waar filmliefhebbers zich thuis voelen. LAB111 kiest voor artistieke en experimentele films, minder bekende titels uit het buitenland en genrefilms die het rafelrandje opzoeken, aangevuld met Q&A’s, filmquizzen en horrormarathons. In de foyer wachten tentoonstellingen en lezingen, en de bar serveert overdag een eenvoudige lunch, ’s avonds zuurdesempizza’s uit een steenoven.
De oudste bioscoop van Amsterdam, The Movies, heropende in maart 2024 na een renovatie van tweeënhalf jaar, en de art-decozalen voeren ons meteen terug naar de gloriedagen van de cinema. Gelakt houten lambrisering, tapijt in oud roze met mintgroen en vanille, bruinfluwelen banken met gouden strepen; we wanen ons zomaar terug in de jaren twintig. Naast reguliere vertoningen organiseert het filmtheater festivals, voorpremières en thema-avonden, en met ons bioscoopkaartje krijgen we korting bij De Roode Remise en restaurant De Willem, voor een filmdiner vooraf.
FC Hyena, film met wijn erbij
Filmclub, wijnbar en petit resto in één, gevestigd in een loods in Noord met een betonnen gietvloer, stoelen in roze, geel en groen, een open keuken met steenoven. Op de oranje loungebanken, in kleermakerszit of languit, bekijken we een mengelmoes van arthouse, cultklassiekers, documentaires en mainstream. Op een mooie dag is alleen al een drankje op het terras met uitzicht over het IJ de moeite waard, ook als we uiteindelijk geen zaal binnenlopen.
Buiten bij FC Hyena zet iemand net de laatste stoel op het terras recht, terwijl de zon over het IJ ondergaat en de eerste bezoekers van de avondvoorstelling zich melden bij de kassa.

Het Ketelhuis, among the factory chimneys
We cross the bridge at Westerpark and find ourselves among the monumental buildings of the Westergas. The fully restored factory building housing Het Ketelhuis is one of the most important venues for Dutch film, alongside European arthouse titles, films for younger audiences and documentaries. From ten in the morning we can sit with coffee and a newspaper, or order a vegetarian lunch on one of the two terraces, where homemade ginger lemonade helps us recover from a walk through the park.

Nine screens with the widest film selection in the city, from mainstream to experimental, set inside an industrial interior with high ceilings, steel beams and old tram benches in the lobby; we would swear we had wandered into an abandoned tram station. The cinema partners with festivals such as IDFA and the Amsterdam Spanish Film Festival, and anyone hungry before or after the film can walk over to the neighboring Foodhallen, where twenty stalls serve everything from Asian street food to Italian delicacies.

LAB111, color inside an old laboratory
Inside a former pathology laboratory, the walls were painted pink, lavender blue and pastel green, Persian rugs were laid down and a mural of Dr. Strangelove went up on the wall; together a colorful paradise where film lovers feel right at home. LAB111 leans toward artistic and experimental films, lesser known international titles and genre films that push at the edges, rounded out with Q&As, film quizzes and horror marathons. The foyer hosts exhibitions and talks, and the bar serves a simple lunch by day, sourdough pizzas from a stone oven by night.
The oldest cinema in Amsterdam, The Movies, reopened in March 2024 after a two and a half year renovation, and its art deco halls carry us straight back to the golden days of cinema. Lacquered wood paneling, carpet in old rose with mint green and vanilla, brown velvet benches lined with gold stripes; we could easily believe we had landed back in the 1920s. Alongside regular screenings, the theater hosts festivals, previews and themed evenings, and our ticket earns us a discount at De Roode Remise and restaurant De Willem for a film dinner beforehand.
FC Hyena, film with wine on the side
Film club, wine bar and petit resto all at once, tucked into a warehouse in Noord with a poured concrete floor, chairs in pink, yellow and green, an open kitchen with a stone oven. On the orange lounge benches, cross legged or sprawled out, we take in a mix of arthouse, cult classics, documentaries and mainstream releases. On a nice day, a drink on the terrace overlooking the IJ is worth the trip on its own, even if we never make it into a screening.
Outside at FC Hyena, someone straightens the last chair on the terrace as the sun sets over the IJ and the first visitors for the evening screening line up at the box office.
Arthouse-bioscopen in Amsterdam bezoeken, dit moet je weten
De vijf bioscopen liggen verspreid over de stad, maar zijn allemaal binnen een halfuur met de tram te bereiken vanaf Amsterdam Centraal.
