A ten meter canvas telling the story of Eva Simons, a flamingo unicorn with a hook through its beak, and Anne Frank greeting us from the facade. Inside this old shipyard warehouse on the NDSM wharf, street art finally gets a permanent home.

Erboven staat in sierlijke witte letters “Let me be myself.”

“Let me be myself.”

We smell the paint before we even see the building. On the square outside museum STRAAT, ten people in blue overalls stand hissing spray cans, laying down blue, yellow and red paint on canvas during a graffiti workshop. Metal containers echo the sound back, chatter and giggling fade slowly into the background as we walk toward the entrance of the old shipyard warehouse.

Anne Frank on the facade

Above the entrance, Anne Frank smiles down at us from a wall several meters tall, her dark hair gleaming, small points of light in her eyes. Above her, in elegant white letters, it reads “Let me be myself.” Brazilian street artist Kobra painted this mural entirely in his own style, colorful geometric patterns layered over iconic faces, a preview of what waits inside.

“Let me be myself.”

A hundred and sixty works under one roof

After a tunnel of particle board we suddenly find ourselves inside the warehouse, where a hundred and sixty artworks hang from steel cables or stand on wooden scaffolding. To the left hangs a canvas about ten meters tall, spray paint on polyester, the largest piece STRAAT has ever commissioned; the detail is staggering, from the beady eyes of a pink brown raven to the folds in a skirt and the shadow of barbed wire reflecting on the legs of singer Eva Simons. Death hides beneath her skirt, a lotus flower floats above her head. Studio Giftig tells her entire life story with spray cans, from darkness into rebirth.

From vandalism to recognition

STRAAT gives a stage to work that would normally be painted over within days or worn away by weather, work the city still often labels vandalism. Here it gets a museum context, recognized as an expression of art, technique and creativity, with renowned street artists from the Netherlands and abroad showing their work. It feels almost like walking between the painted walls of real streets, slipping now and then through a gap into another alley of new creations, though outside we will not often see a delivery van hanging from three steel cables above our heads.

Stories without a caption

At the back of the hall stands Dulk’s six and a half meter tall flamingo unicorn, pieces of trash scattered on the ground, a fishing net around its leg, a hook through its beak; beauty and fragility rendered in a single figure. Further along hangs a black and white canvas by Judith de Leeuw, a woman with her reflection in water, her skin above cracked like craquelure, the woman below unmarked. She made the piece for International Women’s Day, about rebuilding yourself after abuse. And then there’s Wasted Rita, whose handwritten statements look more like post it notes stuck to a mirror than art, black letters on white, inspired by punk and everyday life, dripping with sarcasm that makes us think.

Upstairs, up the steel staircase, sits the cafe. From a stool, a chesterfield or a green velvet chair, we look down on all the color and detail below, an oat milk latte in hand, while downstairs a staff member with a bucket of paint and a brush adds the final touches to a wall that will already look different tomorrow.
