It feels a little like a film set, and by now it basically is one, except the leading role now belongs mostly to Instagram. Parque Lage sits at the foot of Corcovado, facing the Christ statue, and combines tropical rainforest with a neo renaissance mansion we queue for, literally. Marble columns, a pool in the courtyard, and everywhere that one angle toward Cristo Redentor everyone comes searching for.
A terrace with a view, a menu with lower ambitions
On the mansion’s courtyard we find a terrace with white tables, umbrellas and a view of the building itself. It looks elegant, until we order. The “Norwegian salmon salad” turns out to be a mountain of arugula with two pale pink strips of fish, the mayonnaise generous and warm, not exactly welcome. For eighteen euros we should not expect culinary fireworks, but something that tastes like salmon would be nice.
The service is friendly, the pace resembles a lazy Sunday family brunch, and still we eat there, because we are already seated. The view makes up for a lot. Those who come for the food usually only come once. From our chairs we can watch it unfold: the line for the pool, not to cool off, but to claim the exact moment when the marble courtyard and the statue of Christ line up in frame.
Men in Rolexes, women with ring lights
We recognize it instantly from Instagram. Men in white shirts wearing Rolexes, women in Dior maxi dresses, content creators with a designer bag, a tripod and a ring light, everyone waiting in line for that one photo. What those photos rarely show: the indigenous vendors along the driveway, sitting on blankets, their brightly colored bags and knotted bracelets laid out, smoking quietly while watching passersby pose on polished tile.
“Parque Lage is beautiful, but also a mirror of Rio: rich and poor, visible and invisible, side by side without real contact.”
From love story to art school
The mansion was originally built out of love, by businessman Henrique Lage for his wife, the Italian opera singer Gabriella Besanzoni. It gained its real meaning in the 1970s, when the Escola de Artes Visuais moved in. During the military dictatorship the art school offered room for experimentation and dissent, something we can still sense between the columns. Since 1957 it has been recognized as national heritage, and with hundreds of daily visitors, concern over its upkeep keeps growing: the marble floors wear down under all those feet that came only for a photo.
The real park starts behind the house
Anyone who wants to actually experience Parque Lage keeps walking, since the trails start behind the mansion and climb straight into the jungle, away from the line and the ring lights. A palace, a park, a spot for a mediocre cappuccino, or mostly ourselves, centered in the frame, the answer changes with every visitor. We take the photo if we want. Then we keep walking. The best part never makes it onto anyone’s feed.
At the bottom of the stairs, where the forest gives way to garden, a groundskeeper sweeps leaves off the path, unbothered by the cameras a few feet away, as if he has done this a thousand mornings already, with a thousand more still ahead of him.
