A mountain, a cog railway and thirty eight meters of concrete with its arms spread wide. Among the shoulders of hundreds of other visitors we wait for a gaze that was never really meant for us alone, but the view afterward makes up for everything.

The handle of the aircraft door turns to the right under our palm, the blue heels brace against the floor and then we push the door open. Humid air rushes in, white with condensation, thirty eight degrees mixing with the last cold breath of the air conditioning. “Bem-vindo ao Brasil.” Somewhere behind the clouds a man waits with his arms spread wide, taller than every building in Rio combined.

An Uber to the foot of the mountain

The ride to Corcovado starts with a single tap on the screen. At the base of the mountain the route splits three ways: the hike through the Botanical Gardens, the cog railway that creaks its way up, or simply staying put among the palm trees and orchids, where birds in sharp colors dart between the branches and the city feels as far away as the sea. We choose our legs. The trail begins at the Parque Lage mansion and almost immediately the jungle closes in around us, humid and dense.

Water crashes down rock faces we climb past along the way, first over low stone walls, then steeper, until the first drops of sweat trace a line down our backs. On the final stretch we grab iron handholds that pull us thirty meters straight up, a small taste of climbing before the trail hands us back to the forest.

Waiting among the crowd

After two and a half hours we cross the tram tracks. The last stretch we walk shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of other visitors, all headed toward the same face. And then there he is. White, tall, arms spread wide, hair falling to his shoulders. Thirty eight meters, twenty eight meters of wingspan, lit up and older than we will ever be. Among so many shoulders and phones the encounter feels smaller than expected, just one more face looking up.

“You are just one of many, pressed into the crowd gathering at his feet.”

The views around the statue do what the statue itself doesn’t quite manage: they pull you all the way in. Hundreds of thousands of white rooftops fill the curves of the bay, the beaches stretch out until the sand turns to sea blue, and on the far side of the city the two Mountain Brothers stand guard, as if keeping watch over us too.

Silence on an empty terrace

Past the souvenir stalls, a few meters below the crowds, sits a neglected little terrace with white plastic chairs nobody has bothered to straighten. The Coke here is ice cold, exactly what your lungs need after the climb. This is where Rio finally shows itself: no cameras, no stream of people, just the wind moving softly through the trees and the city lying quiet, far below our feet.

Around us other visitors gather their things, tired from the climb but wearing the same expression we are: as if nobody is quite sure what just happened, only that it was worth it. Below, the city waits with all its noise and traffic, as if the terrace’s silence never existed.

The way down moves faster than the way up. At the bottom, near the entrance to the Botanical Gardens, a gardener sweeps sand off the path while a monkey climbs over the railing and disappears into the leaves without any hurry at all.
